Western Renewable Energy is a specialist in hydro power, operating throughout the south west and beyond. We are based at Old Walls, on Dartmoor, and now carry out the engineering and consultancy services previously offered by Old Walls Hydro.  We can offer services to potential developers and land owners from initial pre-feasibility studies, through design and construction, to operational support and maintenance. WRE Ltd has worked on schemes ranging from 1kW off-grid right through to grid connected 500kW projects.

A recently completed project is installation of a 50kW turbine on the River Dart, Ashburton.  This is the first of its type in the country, and puts Western Renewable Energy firmly as a leading installer of this technology in the UK.  It is especially suited to sites with large flow - typically at least 200 litres/second are required - and up to 6000 l/s are easily accommodated in one machine - but heads can be as low as 1 metre.  Installation costs can be significantly lower then comparable Kaplan or crossflow turbines.  This therefore makes these machines worth considering for fitting into existing weirs on main rivers.
